Tsutsumi Platter Namako White

Large ceramic platter / charger / shallow bowl made in Sendai area of northern Japan, most likely in the early 20th C.

 

This item can be used as serving platter, fruits bowl, or kneading bowl.

 

Blue/white glaze is applied on top of the black glaze to create the fusing effect - Tsutsumi pottery's distinctive Namako glazing technique. 

 

Thickly thrown with very heavy terracotta coloured clay. 

 

Condition: Pre-owned. Good.

Chips and ware coming from the age and use.

Crackles on the lips.

5 marks in the bowl from the stacked firing.

About Tsutsumi Yaki

Tsutsumi pottery has its roots in the end of 17 C Sendai city, Miyagi, and was initially supported by the local ruler Date family. Using iron rich clay, Tsutsumi has once produced a vast range of items from tea ware to large storage urns for household use. Its renowned for the Namako glaze, with two different gazes applied to fuse into a bold combination effect. Yanagi Muneyoshi, the advocate of the Mingei Movement, once cited Tsutsumi as one of the best folk potteries in the northern Japan.
