Lidded flat jar by Japanese potter Ohara Koichi 大原光一

Hand thrown. Made in Japan. One-of-a-kind.

Highly acclaimed studio artist's piece. Ideal for jewellery box.

Originally designed as food (such as pickles) container but is also suitable for serving straight from fridge and you know why.

Frost glaze - very nuanced blue green x white with texture.
Frost-like patina with fine indentation.

This is the artist's signature glaze you will find nowhere else.

The colour of the finished ceramics vary depending on the condition of each firing and where the pot was placed in a kiln.

The main body of Frost glaze is natural sillica sand.  Sillica is similar with quartz, and a raw material for glass. It is not a common material for glazing ceramics as it's melting point is too high.

  • About Maker

Ohara Kouichi draws his inspiration from raw texture in the nature. He mixes various local soil and materials to prepare his original clay, glaze and slip, which often contains grit. He creates variety of utility wares with unique colour and texture no one has ever seen.  Some remind us of artefacts that has been buried at the bottom of the sea.

Ohara studied physics at Meisei University before turning a ceramic artist. He learned from the ceramic traditions in Korea and Thailand as well as Tokoname in Japan, where he has been based over 20 years.

Embraced in "the town of teapots", Ohara has often fired his works in a communal wood burning kiln (Anagama) , and also designed three other kilns.
