From an early age, Kate Semple was drawn to form, creating still-life collages and papier-mâché sculptures that often explored the vessel as a recurring motif. After graduating, Semple moved to London to pursue editorial illustration before later settling in York.

During the pandemic, clay became the central focus of her practice, allowing her to explore form in a more tactile and intuitive way. Semple's work is driven by a desire to capture a sense of energy and the moment an idea begins to emerge—much like a line of poetry taking shape. The fluid movement between clay and paper is a defining feature of her practice. Whether working in either material, her vessels balance structure with spontaneity, inviting quiet reflection through experimentation and the evolving nature of the making process.
