Yakishime Bowl by Haga Ryuichi
Unglazed Yakishime bowl made from light coloured clay.
Surface finish is dry and matte like terracotta, but harder than most stoneware pieces.
This piece looks very simple but made with lots or work and high skills, starting from digging soil and prepare for throwing. It shows subtle beauty and sophisticated balance that is often attributed to the very Japanese aesthetics.
Yakishime is one of the well established firing techniques of unglazed pottery pieces, yet finished pieces show a great variety. As it is unglazed, the nature of the clay would play the most role, plus the condition of each firing can never be the same with varying degree of high temperature (1100 -1300 C) . This bowl is one of the rare pieces that managed to achieve this elegant form with its relatively thin body, all from the hand processed clay by the artist. Random marks and speckles look so perfectly matching on the nuanced beige surface, and it is all natural work of Fire God.
Made in Mashiko, Japan.
