100 Years of Samiro Yunoki: Trajectory of Creation

Japanese language edition.

Yunoki Samiro was a leading figure in the Japanese postwar arts and crafts. In 2022, he celebrated his 100th birthday, marked by a series of large-scale exhibitions. This book, published by Joshibi Art University of Art and Design, serves as the exhibition catalogue while also offering a comprehensive look at the artist’s creative life and work.

While the text is in Japanese, 70–80% of the book is filled with stunning visual images, making it accessible and inspiring even without reading the language. There is currently no English edition available.

The exhibition showcases 150 works, spanning stenciled and dyed textiles (Katazome), glass paintings, and book design from the 1950s through the 2000s. It also features recent creations, from large-scale banners to design collaborations with home interior brands. This extensive collection reflects a century of creativity and celebrates an artist whose vision remained fresh and inspiring until his final years.

Samiro Yunoki (1922-2024)  Yunoki started his career in textile dyeing in the late 1940s. It was inspired and led by the encounter with Mingei Movement and the works of Keisuke Serizawa, stencil-dye (Katazome) artist.  Yunoki's focus was on Katazome art textiles, but his works ranged over graphic design, picture books, prints, and three-dimensional sculptures. Yunoki worked for, and led, the Joshibi University of Art and Design from 1950 to 1991.
