Hangiri Sushi Rice Bowl

This large wooden bowl is versatile and can be used in many ways. It is perfect for serving food at parties and gatherings. Originally used in Japan to mix vinegar with hot rice when preparing sushi rice.

 

This item is crafted by hand with time-honoured cask making technique, using the best quality Sawara Japanese cypress wood.

The surface is finished by Kanna, the Japanese hand-plane only. 

 

*Please note that this item is designed for preparing and serving rice. It is not intended to be used as a watertight bucket and may leak if filled with water.

 

A member of the cypress family, Sawara wood is known for its fresh, lemony fragrance. Naturally resistant to water and decay, Sawara has long been used for kitchenware, bath accessories, and other household items.

The wood also contains natural antibacterial properties, making it both practical and hygienic. These qualities have led to its use in a wide range of traditional and contemporary applications throughout Japan.

  • Care

    • Store this item in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
    • Although highly humidity-resistant, always let the item air-dried completely after washing. Occasionally turn it upside down while drying.
    • Clean with a natural fibre/bristle scourer or non-abrasive sponge.
    • This bowl is designed for preparing and serving rice. It is not watertight and may leak if filled with water.
    • If the bowl is unused for a long time, the copper hoops may loosen as the wood dries and shrinks. Simply reposition the hoops, fill the bowl with water for 2–3 hours, and the wood will absorb moisture, expand, and tighten the hoops.
    • Do not soak this item in water for a prolonged time.
