Kyogi Wooden Wrapper

Kyogi Wooden Wrapper

Kyogi is the name for shaved sheet of wood.

This by-product of Japanese forestry has been used as food wrapper for a long time. Paper thin, these sheets are flexible and retain food's moisture very well.

*Kyogi has always been used as disposable wrapper. We do not recommend to reuse this item as food wrapper.

Each pack contains 40 sheets of:

20 x Large sheet

20 x Small sheet

Untreated, food safe, and biodegradable.

Made of variety of Japanese wood timber which were thinned for forestry. Mostly pine or cedar trees.

Although Kyogi has been almost forgotten in the modern time, recently it has seen a remarkable come-back and popularity as a sustainable wrapper.

Usually, 2 sheets are placed crossed each other as shown in the image, wrap the food, and tied with a piece of string or rubber band.

Easy to cut with scissors or knife, this item is also great for various craft projects such as model making or decoupage.

Sheets split along the grain easily by hand.

Please note that the cut end of each sheet would have small splits that were inevitably made when the sheets were cut.

Nice to make it letter pad.

Dimensions:

L 51 x 15 cm

S 42 x 12 cm

Care instruction:

Kyogi has been used as disposal food wrapper.  As Untreated natural wood will decay, we do not recommend to re-use this item as food wrapper.

Before wrapping food, you might want to sprinkle small amount of water on the sheet's surface to moist the wood. Wipe it off if necessary.

If this item was stored in very dry place for long, the wood could lose its moisture, and can split easily instead of bending.

You can make a piece of string from a sheet. Cut off a narrow strip along grain. Sprinkle water on it, fold into 5 mm width, and treat it like a folded paper band. See the images.
